This particular version of "the story that is Rome" has a decidedly Christian "bent", in the style of what my siblings and I used to call a "Cecil B DeMille movie with a cast of screaming extras".
There is a 'lions vs. Christian' bit on the second disc that might be offensive or disturbing to some but it follows the stories as told of the life in Rome in the days of the Empire.
I'll give you a slight hint: in this movie Nero is emperor. In fact, Quo Vadis has a plethora of Biblical detail that preceding and subsequent movies omit.
It isn't "pretty" by some Hollywood standards, they left the sanitizer at home but the telling is very well done.
By the way, you should Google "Quo Vadis". I think you might find the information regarding the translation quite interesting. The performances really come to life in The standard version isn't bad either, its just that on BluRay the performances standout in this format.
One difference is the trailer claims over 30, extras used in the big scenes, in the standard version it almost looks like an effect; in BluRay you can see that its not faked, its all on the screen.
The score by Miklos Rosza is a tremendous addition to an absolutely huge movie loaded with gravitas and passion; scenes are staged with the conviction of a Cecil B Demille epic and equal or exceeding in size and splendor.
One difference is the standard version fills my widescreen TV; in BluRay it is held to its original, squarish pre-widescreen format.
A huge movie with a great payoff, just an exciting viewing in bluray. I'd have to say the BluRay is well worth the upgrade. Quo Vadis took over a decade to plan and a year to film.
It is very well written, beautifully photographed and acted. The supporting actors are top-notch, especially Leo Genn and Patricia Laffan.
Peter Ustinov is, for me, too over the top. There's not a lot of nuance to his portrayal. There are spectacular crowd scenes, including Marcus' victory parade, various parts of the burning of Rome and the persecution of the Christians in the arena.
This film is a treat for the eyes and Miklos Rosza's music makes a treat for the ears as well. I love this movie and I couldn't recommend it more highly.
I love this movie. The Blu-Ray is stunning in resolution and color rendition. One of the most lavish of the epics of all time.
Everybody is wonderful except, as always, Robert Taylor. Miklos Rosza's great score is the last of his originals, because after this, he just kept repeating himself over and over.
Oh, if only it had been made 3 years later in widescreen Cinemascope 55 and multitrack stereo. The first lesson is about Quo Vadis, so here I am watching this nearly-three hour epic for which the word "blockbuster" was created.
According to the course description, Quo Vadis "ushered in the golden age of the so-called 'sword-and-sandal' picture, with its irresistible formula of evil, arrogant Romans versus virtuous, devout Christians.
So far, my favorite scene was the one where the the woman our hero has been trying to rape the entire movie suddenly announces that she loves him.
It was a different era, let me tell you. Also, there is just way too much religion in this movie. We meet Peter. We meet Paul. We hear lectures of Bible verses.
It's all a bit much. I keep waiting for the lions to show up. EDIT: I've finished the movie, at long last! In the second half, you can really see why this was the first blockbuster.
One final observation: apparently, the chariot equivalent of stepping on the gas is whipping and whipping and whipping your horses This was an American film version of the story - unfortunately does not follow the book in certain areas - The main character is supposed to be a Roman with certain habits that were probably improper to be shown in s America - Peter Ustinov steals the movie with his portrayal of Nero - Robert Taylor and Deborah Kerr as the star crossed lovers and Michael Rennie as the Apostle Paul.

But don't sleep on this, which is just as extravagant and vibrant even if it hasn't remained a…. This one just happened to be released in my birth year, so all the more reason to devote nearly three full hours to Romans, Christians, lions and a cast of some 30, extras, including speaking parts, and with a proper Overture, Intermission and Exit music, too.
Now that's what I call totally epic! It's the year 64 AD, some three decades after the crucifixion of Jesus at Calvary. Petronius's nephew, Commander Marcus Vinicius Robert….
A massive movie with huge sets that required 32, costumes to be made and worn by 30, extras. As for the movie For a similar story check out the much better The Sign of the Cross.
Lead actor Robert Taylor is average at best, lead actress Deborah Kerr is better Sitting through this is a little like being in a Sunday School class, with the filmmakers presenting the story of early Christianity as a solemn procession of painstaking martyrdom and redemption.
The persecution of Christians by the Romans is definitely intense to witness, but in contrast, you have a deadly dull romance that's also grossly misogynistic at times.
It's a movie that does not play well today and when certain lines of dialogue are spoken, you'll know why.
It's a big, splashy Technicolor epic filled to the brim with spectacle and color. Though, at its heart, it's really just a stealth remake of Cecil B.
Demille's "Sign of the Cross" which is a wonderfully bonkers s sword and sandal epic that pushes the envelope for the time with the amount of skin on display and the vividness of its lurid violence Quo Vadis is unmistakably an epic film, and while its early 50s sense of theatricality and melodrama might turn people off, it is still an extraordinarily accomplished film.
Here's a film that not only feels big, it looks it too. While the conflict in the story is certainly interesting enough to hold your attention, the spectacle is the star.
Giant sets, and thousands upon thousands of extras. Some effects like the burning of Rome may have dated a bit, but they're surrounded by even grander effects that still wow your eyes.
The film's villain is Nero, played by Peter Ustinov. Here, Nero is portrayed as an impulsive child filled with his own delusions of….
Look at him and see that he is sick. Sick in heart and spirit, and in his soul". These words from Finlay Currie's disciple Peter are about the spoilt, arrogant and ignorant emperor Nero, but they could easily be said about another foolish and dangerous ruler: Donald J Trump.
One of the first epics that Hollywood produced with blockbusting regularity from the '50s through to the '60s, Quo Vadis is also one of the dullest.
Whilst it's enlivened by the wide eyed and bovine Ustinov as Nero, burning Rome for his song, it's a performance sometimes at odds with the plodding, clean cut portrayals around him.
Still I'm glad it's there. Ultimately, Hollywood would go on to perfect the formula with the likes of Ben-Hur.
Quo Vadis is a paint-by-numbers Technicolor historical epic clearly made solely for monetary gain and Oscar clout.
The lead characters are blank slates with a deeply upsetting and poorly constructed romance, one that gets entirely too much contrived effort and screen time, and the side characters are substantially more interesting.
The film's one glimmer of female desire in Eunice was a welcome change of pace from the abduction "romance" of the leads, and Peter Ustinov carries the entire film on his back with his strangely endearing and fully magnetic Nero.
Unfortunately, with a wretched villain so perfectly acted and explored and a lead duo so stagnant and boring, it's hard to root for anyone here.
Spartacus takes Quo Vadis's at times interesting set design and lavish effects and Ustinov and adds a legitimately good story, just watch that instead.
We see burning structures collapsing on masses. We see people burned at the stake. We see lions in the Colosseum ambush huddled families and rip them apart.
That Colosseum sequence is an all-timer for nightmares. For it must have felt like a Mel Gibson film. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Historical novel written by Henryk Sienkiewicz.
